Oceanteam’s fleet manager: “It is crucial to have a flexible and open-minded approach”
Mathieu Feisthauer has been Oceanteam Shipping’s fleet manager since early 2015. Four questions about the main responsibilities and the biggest challenges of his job.
What are the main responsibilities of a fleet manager?
“In close contact with our CEO, I am in charge of all business related to Oceanteam Shipping. As Oceanteam Shipping is a very dynamic company, my scope of work is broad and goes far beyond technical and operational management. From managing the build of Tampamachoco I - our latest construction support vessel - in collaboration with our partner, to assisting our CEO with the development of new charter agreements and to supporting our vessel and operation management company in Mexico- I act at every level.
What did you do before en how did you get in touch with Oceanteam?
“I worked for about eight years as a Superintendent for a container carrier company in France and for an offshore shipping company in the Netherlands. Back then, I was mainly involved in technical and day-to-day operation of various types of vessels. By the time I wanted to broaden my view on the shipping business and work closer to decision makers, Oceanteam offered me the opportunity to join their team and...here we are!”
What is, according to you, the biggest challenge in your job?
“I would say time pressure and dealing with the different approaches of our numerous partners located in different time zones. Due to the nature of the projects we are currently involved in, it is crucial to have a flexible and open-minded approach to deal with all happenings…all the more in a fast moving, global and multicultural context.”
What are you most proud of?
[Laughs] “Dealing successfully with the above and under time pressure! I’ve always wanted to work in a dynamic and international environment… I think I can check this of my bucket list!”
